Lucky penny camper
Unplug. Breathe.
Stay longer than you planned.
The Lucky Penny is a restored vintage camper tucked into a real West Virginia coal mining holler, perched at the top of a hill with a mountain view that'll make you want to do absolutely nothing — and feel great about it. This is the place you come to get out of your ordinary life, slow down, and actually connect with where you are and who you're with.
Fair warning: the outdoor space tends to steal the show.
The outdoor space: A covered hilltop deck with a hammock, a swing, an outdoor chandelier, a fire pit, and a propane grill — all with that mountain view, all usable even in the rain. Our friendly dogs occasionally wander over to say hello. Firewood is available from the neighbor kid down the road for $5 a bundle.
The camper: A charming, well-appointed glamping experience with a full-size bed with memory foam topper, a pullout that sleeps one more if needed, a small kitchen with induction cooktop, pour-over coffee setup, electric kettle, microwave, and a tabletop BBQ grill outside. A powerful heat pump keeps it cozy even in brutal cold — just bring warm socks, the floor gets chilly. Board games, coffee, sugar, creamer, shampoo, conditioner, bug spray, and sunscreen are all stocked.
A note on the shower: hot water runs to about 7 gallons. Spray down, suds up, rinse off — it's part of the adventure.
The surroundings: You're walking distance from the edge of New River Gorge National Park, with easy access to the Kaymoor Trail and Brooklyn Mine Trail. Down the road is the Cunard river access — where rafters put in for the Lower New River — and a flat riverside bike trail where you can watch them float by.
