Where to Get Groceries and Supplies Near New River Gorge
Whether you forgot something at home, need to stock up for a few days in the gorge, or just need sunscreen and snacks before hitting the trail, here's where to go.
Walmart — The Unofficial Visitor Center
The Fayetteville Walmart is the closest thing the area has to a one-stop shop for everything you might need. Full grocery section, camping basics, outdoor supplies, toiletries, wine and beer — if you need it, it's probably here.
It's also apparently where the GPS of one visitor took them when they put "New River Gorge Visitor Center" into the map. A visitor told us this once in the parking lot and we joked that it could be the unofficial welcome center of the New River Gorge.
Kroger
If Walmart isn't your thing, there's a Kroger just slightly south on Route 19 — a full grocery store with everything you'd expect. Great option if you're heading in from that direction or want a more traditional grocery run.
Piggly Wiggly — Hico
On the Midland Trail heading toward Ansted, the Piggly Wiggly in Hico is a solid neighborhood grocery stop that serves the whole corridor between Fayetteville and the north side of the gorge. Good option if you're heading that direction and want to grab supplies without backtracking into town. Open daily 8am–9pm.

Dollar General
There are Dollar Generals scattered throughout the area like they're trying to outnumber the trees. If you're out in a more rural part of the gorge and need basics — snacks, drinks, simple supplies — you're probably not far from one. They're not glamorous but they get the job done.
Swiftwater General Store — North Side of the Bridge
If you're staying on the north side of the bridge, make a point of stopping at Swiftwater General Store. It's a genuinely charming little spot with many of the essentials you might need, plus killer baked goods — including pepperoni rolls, which are the defining food of this region and absolutely worth trying if you haven't. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you're actually somewhere, which is more than you can say for a Dollar General.
The Market and Drinkery — Mt. Lookout
Another gem worth knowing about if you're exploring the north side. The Market and Drinkery in Mt. Lookout has baked goods, food, and everyday supplies in a cute little setting, and in the summer they often have food trucks out front. A great excuse to slow down and see a part of the gorge area that most visitors drive right past.

Outdoor & Adventure Gear
Forgot a dry bag? Need hiking poles? Left your helmet at home? A couple of good options:
Water Stone Outdoors in downtown Fayetteville is a well-stocked outdoor gear shop right in the heart of town — a great first stop if you're missing any adventure essentials.
ACE Adventure Resort has an outfitter shop on site with gear for rafting, climbing, and general outdoor use.
For anything bike-related, New River Bikes and Arrowhead Bike Farm both carry parts, accessories, and can help with basic repairs and rentals. New River Bikes also leads the local kids mountain biking team — shoutout to them for everything they do for the community.
New Roots Community Farm
New Roots is one of those places that makes you feel good about where your food comes from. It's a nonprofit working farm on 82 acres just outside Fayetteville with a year-round farm market stocked with fresh produce, meat, dairy, flowers, and pantry staples sourced from local farms and producers. Cute doesn't quite cover it — it's the kind of place you'll want to come back to every trip.

Farmers Markets
If your timing works out, the Fayette County Farmers Market is one of the nicest ways to stock up on local food. Fresh vegetables, eggs, meat, honey, baked goods, and more from local producers.
Fayetteville — Saturdays, 8am–12:30pm, Courthouse Lot. Runs mid-May through mid-October.
Oak Hill — Thursdays, 2–6pm, Pavilion near DHHR. Same season.
Both are worth an early morning or afternoon wander even if you're not doing a full grocery run. The Fayetteville market in particular is right in the heart of downtown and pairs well with breakfast or coffee at one of the nearby spots.
The Short Version
You're not going to struggle to find what you need out here. Walmart covers almost everything, Kroger is a solid grocery backup, Swiftwater is the charming local option if you're north of the bridge, and the farmers market is worth planning around if you're here on a Saturday morning. Pack what you know you'll need, but don't stress — the gorge has you covered.
